Chapter 12
MARIE WAS FINALLY GOING home after a thirty day stint in rehab. Nancy and her sisters were a strong support system while she was in rehab. They came every evening to the meetings. Each one got to share how Marieâs drug abuse affected them all.
When Marie was released, her sisterâs were right there waiting for her. They told her that her low income apartment was ready. Told her that Nancy was at the house with LilâMan, Starla, and Harmony. Getting everything nice and tidy.
Dayton metro housing placed her in Arlington courts. They were some projects that were on the south side of Dayton. Marie wasnât fond of neither the area nor her apartment, but sheâd have to make do.
Marie was elated to see her mother and children. She was also glad to be in her own place. Though it only had three beds and a black and white television occupying the space. It was home. It was theirs.
While walking the girls to a corner store, Marie was stopped by a girl with copper skin wearing deep red lipstick and an expensive looking wig of blond waves.
âExcuse me,â said the street corner diva. âDo you have a light?â
Marie gave her a light for her cigarette. They stood on the corner and chatted as they smoked.
âDo you stay around the neighborhood? Iâm not trying to be nosy, I just never seen you around before.â
âYes, I live in The Courts,â admitted Marie.
âGirl, me too.â
âWhatâs your address?â she asked.
â6543 Lily.â
âIâm at the end, my address is 6553.â
âWell girl my name is Cinnamon, if you ever need anything knock.â
âThanks,â Marie said. âI will.â
Marie knew she wouldnât be knocking on no oneâs door. She just had too much pride for that.
About a month later, Marie was looking through her cupboards and knew she needed a She didnât have anything for the girls to eat for breakfast, and her check was completely run out. She knew she couldnât possibly ask Nancy without her questioning why she didnât have food or money. She would eventually assume that drugs played a part.
She chose to ask Cinnamon instead. Soon after Cinnamon proved that she was a good friend. If Marie didnât have food, Cinnamon would bring her food. If she didnât have cigarettes she would bring them. If Cinnamonâs favorite girls needed something she would bring it. Marie grew to love Cinnamon like a big sister.
Lately Marie was starting to question how Cinnamon got all her money. She never seemed to go to work, but she never was broke. Marie would get her check on the first and by the time she paid bills and got the girls something her check would be almost gone. Definitely by the tenth, she would be broke.
She wasnât naïve at all. She knew that Cinnamon was doing something illegal. She was convinced that it was drug dealing or prostitution.
One day Cinnamon was over the house doing the girlsâ hair and hanging out. She and Marie sat at the table painting their nails. âGirl I need to ask you something.
